Today I learned that we need to be at Narnia at 10 to 7 so I will have to pick Ambrose up 15minutes early.
Because of this learning now I wont be late.
My next step in learning is to pick Ambrose up at 6:30.

Today I learned that I have been doing the wrong type of goal evidence this year and not making it precise. I will try and make real goal evidence so I will not leave Fendalton without ever competing a real goal/evidence.

Today I learned that when you mess up a interview people get annoyed with you and make you feel let down. When I have another interview I will try and not laugh or interupt if someone else is speaking. I had the interview with Jason and Hamish. We had 3 trys before we got a interview that was Acceptable.

Reflection of the 1st of December

Today I learned that taking photos of all the new entrants coming to
Fendalton school next year is a hard job as I had to do it with sarah.
To make the already tricky job trickier we had to name every photo with
the childs name.
Because of this learning I will think twice before I accept a job like
this again.
The next step in my learning is to get better at taking digital photos and
editing them.
Something I don't understand is why some of the children were refusing to
have their photo taken.

Year 6 breakup=:'(

Today I learned that the Year 6 breakup party is going to be at Jelly Park instead of QE2. Im really annoyed at this because I havn't been to the new hydraslides. top of an empty bottle and put the bottle in a bucket of boiling water.

Our flow week has been bad this week. We are not following the plan very welland are not cleaning up our mess. We are doing flow week next week and we are going to try harder to clean up our mess and our act. I am doing it alone so I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes. If we are not good then I will not do it again. We also didn't book the kitchen's early enough so I am going to do that proplerly.

Reflection- flow week

Today I learned that I am possibly giving some of my team too much freedom during flow week. I learned this when a number of staff came to me to let me know of the poor state of the art area in the Village. I checked and yes, it was a real mess. I need to tighten up the system for flow week so that children understand that they are expected to clean up after themselves, plus build in more accountability so that they know they need to create things that show improvment in learning.

Because of this learning I now know to keep a closer eye on how flow week is going plus I can structure it a little more.

The next step in my learning is to get this across to anyone involved in flow week and follow up by viewing the outcomes they have come up with. If they are not to a standard that the students are capable of then we need to ask the question "Is flow week actually working?" and "How can flow week be refined to ensure that we are getting quality learning?"

Moving House

On friday the 18th of November I moved into my new house. It was chaos! For the whole weekend there were boxes everywhere! My bedroom was a huge mess. Yesterday I got my curtains in.

Today I had revision on finding the perimeter, volume and area of shapes. I didn't finish the sheet but hardly anybody else did. Because of this learning I can now find the area, perimeter and volume of shapes/houses just by knowing the length, width and height. Reflection- transition and change

Today I learned a bit more about what is is like going to Cobham when Sami Swadi came in to speak to us about his transition. Sami gave us lots of useful information about what it was like when he first went to intermediate and how it is different from Fendalton.

It was interesting to notive that those in Team 13 who aren't going to Cobham found it hard to pull out of the information the aspects of change that Sami went through.

Because of this learning I now know that I need to help the team unpack their ideas about what change is and how to deal with it effectively- whether it be bad or good.

The next step in my learning is to do more work with Team 13 about change- what is is and how to deal with it. Watch this space...

Today I learnt that when we go to intermidit there would be some changes
at there and because of this learning now I can be
ready when I am there on the first day and because of sami comming in and
talking us about cobham now I know who is the nice teacher ane who is not and
now I know that you are only alowed to where you sports uniform
only on Tuesday and you have to change befor you leave the class room
and because of this learning now I can be ready for my next year in Cobham and something that
I don't understand is why my brother didn't even tell me, and he haven't even told mum about the

Today I learned that Hamish and Paddy will believe anything that Edward and I say because we told them we went to Queenstown and saw the Harry Potter 4 NZ premiere (spelt wrong).

Today I learned that you can publish your comic life creations to the internet! This is really cool and here are our first two creations- one by Jason and Nick about discus, the other about my rafting trip down the Rangitata. This is a really exciting way to publish our writing.

Today I learned how relax better than I used to. I hope that we do that relaxation thing again. I think we should do it after lunch and when we go home

Peaceful Relaxing

Today I learned what "Peace "somthing" " was. We had to lie down and relax our body and our minds, we had to try and shut out everything from our mind and take the weight out of our body and let our thoughts float away like clouds but I felt like there wasn't much left in my mind except from lost thoughts and the sound of the recording from the mac. Because of this learning I can now use this for thinking up ideas in a much more peaceful and nice way. My next step in learning is to try and block out more things in my mind.

Today me and kitty gave our buddies music lessons. The first one was a DISASTER but the second 1 was okay.

The value of blogging

Hi team 13

In the very short time I was in your classroom at the end of the day last Tuesday, I notice Rob asking you to e-mail your goals to him that night. I also noticed that you were using blogs because of a notice on your whiteboard.

I am utterly convinced of the value of ICT's to help student learning, and at the same time, am a novice with using ICTs. In fact, creating my blog also created a little angst inside me. Was I doing it right? What would it look like? How would I use it?

Much of my work with teachers is about helping them integrate the use of ICTs effectively into learning because my expertise is to do with student learning. I figure I don't have to know heaps about how to use particular ICT tools because you kids do and you can teach me (and other teachers.)

I think the work you and your teacher are doing with the use of multiple technologies might provide a powerful voice to help teachers realise what this means to students and how it helps their learning - there is nothing like teachers hearing interesting reflections from students on what they are doing and thinking and how they are doing it.

Gym Yesterday

Yesterday we left school at 10.30 for gym at Christchurch school of Gym. We were tested on the tramp, the bar, the beam and jumping over objects. We were also tested on the mat. It it was really fun! We will be going to gym every Monday for 5-6 weeks.

Today I learned that moving the orchestra to a new location is not as easy
as it would seem.
We lost all these bits and pieces.
Because of my learning I can now know to check that things are there
before the thing they are used for (orchestra) starts.

reflection on commitement

Today I had yet another choir practice.
I learned about how tiring it can be making a 4month long
commitement.
I've had four 2 and a 1/2 hour practices and 1 3 hour prac.,
and a 3 day holiday course which was 6 and a 1/2 hours a day.
I also had a full day prac yesterday and a half day prac. today.
PLUS 6 performances including one tonight, so I warn you: If you ever
consider becoming part of the townhall jnr. or snr. special choirs, beware.

A sad day for Rob and Angela

Last night we lost Mr Mistoffelees- he was hit by a car around the road. We are extremely upset and sad and will miss him dearly. He would have been ten months this Friday. Here is a photo of him when he was little:

Today I learned that I should keep practicing photoshop as when I went to
help someone today they got quite frustrated as I didn't teach them as well as I could have.
Because of this learning I can now know to practice this when ever I can!

Reflection- calendar art

Today I learned that the calendars are a really important thing for everyone in team 13. I had decided how everyone's art was to be produced and found out later that many did not want to do their art in the way I had decided.

Because of this learning I will give team 13 more choice in how they present their artworks for the calendars.

today we had our jabs every time it seems to stay in for longer they are not as bad as you inticipate at first really its just like beeing pinched. we people are sick after they have there jabs its mostly in there head.

Today we had our third meningitis B jab. we were going through maths when some people came and told us it was time to have our jbs I was nervous and we had to go srait to the multipurpouse room. they held the syringe in for longer so it hurt more than the others but It wasnt as bad as I thought. and its best not to get to nervous beause then it can make you not feel to well as some people found out.

Today I learnt that that twisting your arms round so your fingers face you
when you are on the bars gives you more of a cahnce of getting a broken
wrist.

Today I Learned... how to make a really creative picture using photoshop without pictures.

Holidays are nearly over

I've had a great holiday. I've managed to get back into my fitness and am swimming regularly. I've been mountain biking a couple of times (but not much due to a middle back injury which is still niggling me) and even got some gardening done around the house!

I finished Nelson Mandela's autobiography "A Long Road to Freedom" which was superb and have started Stephen Covey's 'The 8th Habit" which is proving to be an interesting read.

All in all I'm relaxed and ready for term 4. I am looking forward to catching up with team 13.

Holidays

This holidays I was wondering why so many people I know went to Australia
this holidays.

I also think this holidays went alot slower because we didn't go to Wellington
because our cousins were in Auz.

Today I learned how to make a podcast! A podcast is an audio blog and is much easier than blogging because all you do is record your voice into the computer, click publish and whammo- it's up there!

Reflection-Wearable Arts

In the wearable arts it was easy to ring sources of materials for the costume since I had already had experience doing that in inquiry. It was harder filling out the RAMS form, transport letter and permission forms!!! That has given me experience preparing for a trip because we didn't go on any trips in inquiry. My mum helped me a lot with design ideas for the costume.
I really enjoyed helping choreograph the dance intro for beyond our natural world.
Overall, I really enjoyed doing wearable arts and I would happily do them again!

I think that so far wearable arts has gone really well!!!!!!

If I did it a second time I wuld do some things differently: Plan as I go, NOT be the model and work with some people that I dont usually work with.

Reflection- the word pedagogy

Today I learned that that there is no word for learners relating to the word pedagogy. I learned this by going online to the Visual Thesarus and looking it up. I realised this when reading a book I'm referring to for my keynote in Dunedin called 'The Children's Machine' by Seymour Papert.

Something I didn't understand is that I thought this word meant 'the art and science of teaching children' when according to VT it really only means 'the science of teaching or instruction'. A colleague I met at the thinking conference in Melbourne described it as the 'art and science of teaching'. I checked with our Oxford dictionary at home and yes, it is the art and science of teaching...

Because of this learning I now have a deeper understanding of the word pedagogy and how it relates to teaching and learning. It has also led me to question what I say more closely, because I believe that what we say becomes who we are and what we do.

The next step in my learning is to try to invent a new word for the 'art and science of learning' or 'being a great learner'.

Reflection- fractions

Today I learned that learning to convert fractions to percentages is a good way to help people practise their basic facts. I learned this because we were using improper fractions (when the numerator is large than the denominator) and converting them to regular fractions and then to percentages.

Because of this learning I can now help my students understand the importance of memorising their basic facts in another way, plus I can also look for ways to make this conversion easier for those who don't yet understand.

The next step in my learning is to check on those who don't understand how to convert fractions, plus give those who do understand an opportunity to invent a game which helps to teach this to others. Some have created a bingo-type game which is a good idea!

Today I learned that sometimees being on mediators can be very boring!!!
Especially when no one has a proper problem.
The only problems we got were things more to do with us telling people off which is not whatmediators do.
Because of this learning I now know to take something to do.

Today I learned that having a parent help (Liz) really helps!!!
We have advanced on the costume and are much nearer completion.
I also learned that it is quite uncomfortable in a chicken wire corset!!!!

Today I finished my speech and when I practised it with Edward and Tim it was 1 minute 56 seconds. But when I read it to the class it was 2:36 instead of my other time. I think my speech was good because I made it funny. In the afternoon we had wearable arts and we have nearly finished our one.

Today I learned that people might do something that they think is smart and then regret it afterwards. Reflection- storytelling and algebra

Today I learned that you can teach algebra through story. My maths class were looking at what a variable is and came up with many brilliant ideas such as something that changes, a number that can alter and so on. We talked about how the water in the fish tank fluctuates and that this is the variable. Someone mentioned that that wasn't the only variable- that the amount of water or sunlight also are variables! Brilliant!

Because of this learning I'm going to get the class making up their own stories which involve variables and then express these as equations.

The next step in my learning is to share this with my teaching team because I think they will be interested and might want to try this. I'll do this by emailing this blog reflection to them.

Reflection- growth in independence

Today I realised how much I missed my class while I was away during the
last week of last term.

I also learned today that Bryony and Katie have really developed in their
ability to be able to problem solve. I realised this while watching them
stick to a tricky software installation job that I gave them. The great
thing about this was that they enjoyed doing it, stuck to it all day, AND
got it going. This saved me heaps of time and I'm really grateful for this.

Because of this learning I can now give Bryony and Katie more
responsibility for various things and know that they will get the job done.

Today I learned that it's quite tricky to get all the ethernet plugs plugged into the right slots in the classrooms. You don't know which one goes into which hole. I also learned that maths is fun if you add in jellybeans. We played greedy pig.

Something I don't understand is which plug go in which hole at the moment. I can probably learn from this though.

Because of this learning I now know that one plug has to go into F7 and another plug goes into the hub.

I'm back now and am down in Te Anau with Angela and her friend Jennette from London. Today we drive to Arrowtown where we'll base ourselves for a couple of days skiing. I'm going to learn how to snowboard which I'm looking forward to! Melbourne was brilliant- I learned lots of really challenging and useful things and also had a lot of what we do validated too! It was also good to catch up with some close friends who teach in Australia.

I hope you are all enjoying time with family and friends where-ever you are. Sarah- have fun in Santiago and drop us a line through the blog if you can. Tara- enjoy time with relations in Ireland and Dubai. Kitty- see if you can get your grandparents involved in the blog too!

I could finish my sewing in time (4 days) and I actually had spear time.

Today I was sick.
BUT I still learned because today was my B'day and I got a book on animals and caring for them and I learned things like not forcing your animals into their new enviroment and things like that.because of this learning if/when I get another pet I will know that doing this will make him/her happier.

Today I learned if you are using the 'The Running Stitch' you have to go 3 strands forward and put the needle through then go 1 strand through and then pull the needle out to get a very good pattern.

Because of this learning I can now get a good pattern.

Something I don't understand is that sometimes if you don't use the 3 strands forward and 1 strand through thing sometimes it will disappear underneath the material.

Today I learned about arkward situations in mediators where we ahd a
person who wanted to play a game wqith someone elese and they werent
making fair teams for the game then they said that they didnt want to play
the game and were all arguing with each other then we solved the problem
eventually by saying that next time they played that game they would make
fair teams.
Because of this learning i can now solve peoples problems better in
mediators.
The next step in my learning is to learn to solve these problems quickly.

Sick at home

I'm still unwell which is a pain because I'm flying out to Melbourne this afternoon. At least I am to enjoy some really great learning at the thinking conference which I'm excited about!

Today I learned how to embed a sound file into my blog which could be really useful! Click here to play my first sound file

Here's what I did...

1. Made a new conference called audioblog inside my Home Page Folder in FirstClass. You can email to a conference using FirstClass but not directly to a folder which is a pain, that is why I had to make a conference.


2. Made a new email message to this conference, which came up in the directory in FirstClass.


3. Recorded a voice message and sent the email to the conference.


4. Opened up my home page folder and went inside the audioblog conference, clicked on the link to find the URL for the .wav file that is the voice message (phew). Copy this link to the clipboard.


5. Found out how to embed a sound file (or a movie) into a web page at this webpage.


6. Pasted the code into my blog and changed the URL of the sound file.

Wammo- it works!
Because of this learning I can now help those for whom writing is not easy to record their reflections.
The next step in my learning is to try to make this easy so anyone can do it! Plus I want to make it so that it is embedded in the page rather than as a hyperlink- for some reason blogger won't accept the 'embed' tag.

Reflection- sketching

Today I learned about sketching that sometimes you can make a nice effect if you push lighly on the pencil. Because of this learning I can use this in my art. Something I don't understand is why it makes it so smooth when you look at it? The next step in my learning is to draw in one direction only.

Reflection- home learning

Today I am just finishing off my home learning. I am confident and feel ready to present it on Wednesday. I found being organised and doing a little bit each day was really helpful. It makes SUCH a difference not having to worry about it and not having a late night on Tuesday due to using one day for a whole WEEKS home learning. I really like the stuff that I have done and feel that I have done a good job.

Today I learned that we could actually do our Tsunami Health Watch show because we only had about 15 mins to film but we actually made it in that time.

Reflection- calculating area

Today I learned more about area and calculating area. Because of this learning I can now calculate area and not make the silly mistake I made in maths olympiad.

This is the mistake I made:
Since I had not done area for a while I calculated the sides but then I took 50 to 5 and 70 to 7 and then it was 7 times 5 = 35 so then i added on a zero but i should have added on two zeros. so the real answer is 3500!!!

The next step in my learning is to.....
1. Practise my area a little every now and again so i do not forget how to calculate area.
2. To get better at calculating area on shapes like the one in the picture.

Reflection- using a hockey stick

today i learnt:

because of this learning i can now:

Reflection- organising ourselves for the web challenge

Today I learned that the web challenge is highly motivating for many students in team 13. I've seen Katie and Bryony working really hard on this in their own time which is very satisfying for me to see. Not all web challenge groups are doing this and I'm interested in why this might be.

Because of this learning I know what is important to them and I also need to ensure that I put in place the right scaffolds so they can be successful. One idea to to allow them to take out some of their home learning activities (that are low priority for them) so they can spend time on the web challenge.

The next step in my learning is to spend some time learning more about their ideas so I can help them as much as possible.

Things to think about when reflecting on your inquiry

There are a wide range of things people need to consider when reflecting on their inquiries, here are some thoughts...

A good starting point is to think of the difficult aspects and the easy aspects and the resulting learning from these times. Here are some things to consider:

How well you worked as a team (making decisions, communicating with each other, listening to others' ideas, etc.).

What was hard about the way we formed inquiry teams? What would you suggest for next time?

What it was like creating a key question with people you didn't naturally choose to work with? What was good and not so good about this?

What was it like using the telephone to research? What was difficult? What was easy about this source of information? How does the efficiency of this tool compare to other tools (for example the internet or books)?

How did you manage to check the quality and relevance of the information you found? Which tools did you use to help with this?

How well did you organise the information you found?

Which part of the inquiry process did you and your group find the most challenging and why?

What was the area in which your group needed to improve the most? What would you do differently next time to make this happen? What tools or skills do you need to be more successful next time you do inquiry?

Reflection- powerpoint addiction?

Today I learned that powerpoint is very addictive with the sound effects and all.
Because of this lerning I can now make more effects with powerpoint.
Somthing I don't understand is how it is so addictive.

June 28 reflection on Inquiry

Inquiry Reflection June 28

In inquiry I learned about teamwork and setting ground rules on how your group communicates.
I learned that before you start you need to decide and agree on how you are going to present your findings.
Because of this leaning I can now put this leaning to use in future inquirys so that the group has deside and then set the ground rules of how the group communicates before they begin as well as decided on how they are going to presnt their findings to people.

Pros of the Natural disaster warning systems inquiry group (Katie, George, Gareth and Alexander)

We have finally desided on how we are going to present our findings to the class (after much changing round)

We have got info from people and the internet (there are not many books on our topic as it is a relatively new subject)

We managed to settle reasonably quickly to the task at hand but we were not always on task when planning (Breaking of laptop in schools pod meant we weren't able to use the pod of laptops only class and library computers)

We Managed to work around the avalibility of resourses e.g others using the phone, no computers to use.

Cons

We disagreed a lot at the start.

We had problems with recording phone numbers so we had to ring back again and so the reseptionist got a little annoyed!!!!

I think that its really cool using html programming because it a really easy type of programming.
Here are the basics I know :
To make italics you put < i / > round the letter that you want to be in italics it has to have no spaces in < i / >.

To make it bold just the same but put a b instead of an i. Here's a picture of me ha ha!!

Reflection- goal setting

Today I learned that goal setting needs to a continual focus. I learnt this because I gave team 13 a 'test' (which wasn't really a test but rather just me finding out who remembered their goals!) to see if they could remember their goals for term two. As it turned out many couldn't which indicates to me that they aren't thinking about them enough.

Because of this learning I now understand that I need to make the system for goal setting and making progress towards these goals much more obvious and overt. I will do this by publishing goals in a visual way for all to see and refer to all the time- perhaps through art?

The next step in my learning is to make sure I do something about this and make everyone's goals public for all to see. I'll ask team 13 about this tomorrow and get their ideas about how we could do this.

Reflection- Blogger & inquiry

Today I learned how to teach Jinny pronounciation of hard words while doing inquiry & I also learned my whole script.
Because of this learning inquiry will be easier to go by.
I am also glad that I got set up as a blogger so now I can just reflect on the computer.

Reflection- Easier Division

Today I Learned how to do an easier version of 'Division'. It was hard and Jason told me, although I didn't learn how to do it fully.

Because of this learning I can now do some 'division' questions more easily.

Today I learned that C.S.G could have been organised more effectively.

Reflection - Sunday 26 June

Today I slept in, played computer and watched the movie 'The Mask' which was cool. I did some touch typing practice (that was really good). And yeah that's what I did today.

Reflection- Soccer

Today I played soccer and we drew 4-4 against Leeds, the game was tough because we coulden't get our sprigs into the icy ground. Later on in the day we did some gardening and played a game of soccer in our back lawn. At 6:30 we watched Daredevil, that was cool. Then we watched the rugby and the All Blacks won 21-3. Hip hip Hooray!

Today I learned that someone in Auckland is the one who makes the decisions on what to put on the news.The next step in my learning is to e-mail him.

Reflection- learning to work as a team

Today I learned that it is really difficult for many of the inquiry groups to get a consensus when deciding on what to do in their inquiry. The difficulty is happening when some group members are making decisions about what the group should do without including others in their decisions. This in turn causes frustration for others and conflict. I noticed one of the inquiry groups doing an excellent job at dealing with the challenges they faced in this area which is brilliant.

Because of this learning I now think that this inquiry has changed for some of the team to become an 'inquiry into how we work as a team', which in some ways is perhaps more important- the learnings from this will be taken into later life for children.

The next step in my learning is to ensure that we reflect on these happenings in the team and to record some quality ideas about how we can improve next time.

Reflection- mediators

Today I learned that some people are finding mediators hard because of this learning I can now help these people.
Something I don't understand is why the hockey team I play in has been put down two grades.
The next step in my learning is to get better at mediation myself.

Flow Week

Dear Team 13,

I've been thinking a lot about the idea of a 'flow week' where people get
to plan out their entire week and still want to try it. Here are some
thoughts for you to consider...

I don't want to disappoint people and make this a 'you're in or out' sort
of thing. I think a good way is for you to self-select based on criteria.
Some of this criteria I will develop as your teacher, and some you will
decide on yourselves. I have created the starting a rubric online ready
for this purpose which we will finish tomorrow.

Once the rubric is finalised we will get people who are interested in this
to complete it, and show evidence if necessary. I'm also wondering if
people need to put in an application explaining why this would benefit
their learning. Do you think people should apply to be considered for this?

I don't want too many people to do this initially, it needs to be a pilot
so that I can get used to managing it as your teacher.

Reflection- inquiry questions

Today I learned that it takes time to devise really powerful questions. I learned this after Matt and Emily came back from the museum trip which they had organised themselves. The had a whole heap of information that they had learned from their contact at the museum Norton. I turned the piece of paper over and saw the questions they had designed and some of them were really well thought through questions. I can't remember what they were but I do remember that these questions were really seriously powerful (I'll try and find them on Tuesday when I get back to school...).

The other thing I've learned is that I need to be patient and let my students organise themselves. It has been a long process getting the space inquiry group to get their field trip organised but they've done it!

Because of this learning I know that I can trust team 13 to come up with the goods in terms of learning and I can also rely on them to come up with awesome questions! Wow!

The next step in my learning is to share this with the teachers I'm going to work with down south in Dunedin. I also want to involve more people in the team 13 blog somehow and wonder if getting them invited from their parents' email accounts might work?
