Week 5 next week, is it just me or it this term going really fast?

We are in desperate need of tissues, can you please bring a box of tissues in for the class.
Due to the reports being done and assessments needing to be completed the children will not be receiving a new book to take home each day. They will be taking their poetry book home for the week for their home reading. If they forget to bring this home then please encourage them to read a book they have at home.

Wednesday 10th November 12.30 - 3pm. Senior show at Ngaio Marsh Theatre - Please see your classroom teacher if you are available to parent help with this trip asap.

Wednesday 17th November 3.30 - 6pm. Thursday 18th 3.30 - 8pm. Student Led Conferences, please see the timetable below to see what time you are required to be here with your child. Please make sure your child is in school uniform as this is a formal conference for the children. You will be able to take the learning reports home at these conferences.

Orchestra Demo Concert - The school orchestra will demonstrate all the instruments that will be available to learn next year. Should you wish your child to learn an instrument a form will go home following this concert for you to fill in for next year's tuition.


Week 8
Junior Athletics Day - Run, Jump Throw day 11 - 1pm Thursday 2nd December. This is the Junior version of athletics day. This is only for the junior school and parents are welcome to come and watch and then share lunch with them afterwards. Sport uniforms to be worn on this day. (Postponement day is the 6th December)

Read, Feed, Speed Day - Day for the Dad's to come in and have some fun with their children. They will come to the classrooms and read with their children, then share in a sausage sizzle and then partake in some physical activity on the fields in a very friendly class game of soccer. Friday 3rd December

Week 10
Cathedral Visit - Thursday 16th December. Come and listen to the lovely singing voices of the junior team as they sing Christmas Carols at the Christchurch Cathedral.

Final School Assembly - You will be welcome to take your children home straight after the assembly. This assembly starts at 9.30 and should finish about 10.30am.

Term 4 Week 3

What's on?

Week 3 (This week)
Swimming - Our swimming time is 1pm so we will be leaving at 12.30 to get to the pool in time to get changed and ready for our lesson. We will have a snack at 12 to tied us over but won't each our lunch until we get back so we don't get stitch before swimming. Thank you to all those parents who volunteered to help with this, please come along on the day/s you said you could help by 12.25pm.

Disco - Friday 29th October, Halloween Disco Juniors (Yrs 1 -3) 6 - 7.15pm. Seniors (Yrs 4 - 6) 7.30 - 9pm.


Week 4
Swimming continued

Middle Team Gala - Wednesday 3rd November. This is an after-school event and everybody is welcome to come and see what is up for grabs, there will be all kinds of stalls, music and talent on show. Come and check it out, don't forget to bring your money.

Week 6
Student Led Conferences - Please make sure you have returned your forms stating which time you wish to have these conferences. If you do not put a time in one will be allocated to you. This is the conference that your child leads with you in a group with other class mates. These are half hour slots and your child, along with 3 or 4 other families, will lead you through a day in the life of a Junior Team Member. They will go over what happens in their classroom and what they have learnt and then they will take their learning reports home with them for you to have a better look through. This will then be returned the following week.


Week 7
Last Day for Bible's in Schools - Friday 26th November

Reminders

Dear Parents

The first day back went well and the children all seemed very excited about being back. This week we are focusing on The Commonwealth Games and a few children are doing a wee project to share with the class on Friday about it. I am looking forward to seeing what they have found out. They are also pretty excited about sharing it because they get to use the iPad to record their findings.

The children will need to remember to bring their sunhats to school now and they can leave them in the cloakbay until they leave at the end of the term. If you already know that you will be leaving early this year please try to remember this hat otherwise it will go to lost property at the end of the term and you will need to find it when you come back next year, this goes for any jerseys or anything left behind as well.

After Labour Weekend (week 3 Tuesday 26th October) the children will be starting their swimming lessons. Please make sure that everything your child brings to school is labelled especially if you want to get it back. This includes undies and socks as we have had these left behind before and no child ever claims them, so please make sure you label all your child's clothes, togs, towels and bags etc.

We are going to start a new "Drop your child off at the door" policy every Wednesday. This means that no parents are allowed into the classroom on Wednesday mornings as we are trying to encourage their independence and see if they can organise themselves. If this works well and all children are able to manage themselves then we may finish the year off as we mean to start them next year as this is also a pre-requisite for being in a year 3 class next year.

Team 13 Newsletter

Welcome back!

I hope you have all had a wonderful and enjoyable holiday and are now well rested and ready for a fun filled action packed term.

This term we have (not necessarily in this order):
The Fendalton Friends (FF) Commonwealth Games, A wonderful puppet show at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, The Christchurch Schools' Music Festival at the Town Hall (this is for the senior choir and you may have some older siblings in this), the Halloween Disco, Student Led Conferences, Learning Reports going home, the Golf Tournament, the Feed, Read and Speed Father's Day, Class placements for next year and the Junior Team Christmas Carols at the Cathedral day to name but a few.

But first let's have a look at week 1.
Monday - Welcome back to school. What changes do you notice in the classroom?
Tuesday - FF time 11 - 12.30 to prepare for Thursdays Commonwealth games. A notice will go home with your child today to say what country they are and what colours they need to represent this country. These colours will then need to be worn on Thursday.
Wednesday - The Farm at the End of the Road show 11.00 - 12.30pm. Parent help is required for this excursion however only 1 parent is needed, please see your Classroom teacher urgently if you are interested.
Thursday - FF Commonwealth Games 11 - 3pm Parents are welcome to come and watch, this will be a fun rotation system with a break at 12.30 - 1pm for lunch. Wear your team colours (see notice that went home with your child on Tuesday)
Friday - Anne Talaska will be in Room 13 until lunchtime as I will be away with the Senior Choir for the CSMF practice in Town hall all morning but will be back for the afternoon. We will then have our first Junior Team Christmas Singing Practice for the Cathedral visit later in the term.

As I said this term looks to be a very busy, fun filled action packed term. I will keep you informed as much as I can on this Blog so keep checking it to see what we are up to.

Term 3 Recount

What has Team 13 been up to this term?

• We changed the handwriting to triple blend beginnings. Bella

• We had a week off school because there was an earthquake in Christchurch. We had to wait to be told when the school was safe before we could go back. Rory & Lily
• We had 2 African people come to teach some African drums and we all got to have a go and the teachers did a funny dance. Max

• We have been practicing our production for next week. Jordan
• We learnt a new Jump Jam song today - we can now dance to the Candyman song. Emily
• We are now in round 2 for the Star Child. Hugo
• We have painted different trees for different seasons when Miss Phelps was here. Xavier
• We have learnt about fractions, we now know how to half and quarter groups of objects. Lucas
• We have been learning some spelling words and Miss Kincaid tests us to see if we can get 10 out of 10. Justine
• We have had an Earthquake drill to teach us how to be safe in an Earthquake. Reuben
• We have learnt about seasons and how the earth rotates around the sun and we are the Southern Hemisphere and if we are closest to the sun we will be having summer. George
• Every Monday we get a new learning rubric to help us with our independent learning. We get to choose what activites to do at what time. George
  

Earthquake news

Hi Rug Rats

I hope you are all well and have managed to keep safe this past week. It's been pretty scary hasn't it?

My family and I are fine. We have had some damage to things falling in our house, lots of broken bottles, glass and glasses, 2 of our tv's broken etc but luckily no damage to our actual house so we are still safe.

I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday where we can share our experiences and see how everyone else has been coping.

Amazing to think that we are now more than half way through term 3. Is it just me or does this year seem to have flown past?

What do we have in store for the rest of this term?

The Arts

Well, now that book week is over we will be having a big focus on the Arts. As you will already know from the school Newsletter we are having an Arts fortnight in weeks 8 & 9. Throughout this fortnight there will be a big range of wonderful events happening. We will have a grand opening, performances galore from all the teams, buskers, an open Arts day where you will be welcome to walk through the school and see al the wonderful Art that will be happening that day, Arts displayed in the Village from every child in the school and an Art Extravaganza evening to name but a few. The Arts Extravaganza evening will be filled with children and adults performing their amazing musical talents for one and all to enjoy.

Days coming up that will concern you are:

• Friday 27th August - National Standards letters go home with your child.
  
• Friday 10th September - 5.30 - 7.00pm. Junior team production. There will be a gold coin donation at the door for this and it will be held in the Hall. The children are to go to their allocated classrooms by 5.30 ready for their performance at 6pm. (Please note if you have children in the senior school their production is in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre on Wednesday night 8th September.)
• Wednesday 15th September - Arts Open day. There will be a programme going home before this date to tell you what is going on, where and when. Remember you will be invited to see what is going on throughout the school not just in your child's classes but in all the classes. You can check out what the middle school is doing and what the senior school get up to etc you will not be restricted to the junior school or just the class that you have a child in.
• Thursday 16th September - Arts extravaganza evening. From 6pm - 7.30pm the village will be open for an amazing variety of talent from our children, teachers and other adults within our school community. This is the best of the best on show and well worth a look. There will also be a gold coin donation for this event.
• Wednesday 22nd Thursday 23rd September - Student Learning Conferences
• Friday 24th September - Last day of term.
  

Parent Talk Time

• Friday 27th September - There is a talk on Dyslexia this Friday at 9am in the staffroom.
• Also come to the talk by Richard Taylor - How Boys Learn. This is on Wednesday September 1st at 7.30pm in the village. Very enlightening.

Our Learning Journey

We have a new system that just started this week to make the children more responsible for their own learning. They have a weekly rubric of everything that is to be done within each day. There are must dos like story-writing, learning spelling words, a maths activity and handwriting and then there are extra activities that the children can do that are conducive to the children learning. Some of the children are at the stage now where they can choose when to do these activities throughout the day. I still have a routine of set times because that is when I work with groups and the children can chose if they want to do reading at reading time or they could do a different activity and do reading another time. Some children need to stick with the routines and this is fine too.

This is new and as we go through it we will modify it to work better and easier for us. The children seem to really enjoy having that responsibility, some are struggling with it but that is also a learning curve for them to realise how they learn, some need a lot of structure and some are happy to choose their own way. Having said that, here is our focus for our learning.

Maths
Fractions, We are learning to find halves, quarters, and other fractions of sets and shapes.
Written Language
Narratives continued. We are learning to plan, write, edit and publish our work.
Handwriting and Poetry
Our handwriting focus is on triple blend beginnings like 'scr' and 'shr' etc. On Friday's we get a poem and worksheet with this focus.
Topic
We are still learning about the seasons and how and why they change. We are teaming up with Room 1 for the junior production where we have all 4 seasons represented with the different arts. For example Autumn is drama, Summer is Dance, Winter is Music and Spring is Visual Art. We are lucky enough to have some extra support to help teach some of these, thank you to Miss Phelps who is helping with the Dance and Sarah Buchanan (Hugo's mum) helping out with Drama. Children will need to wear clothes representative of their season. Please ask your child what Season and Art group they belong to. Winter/Music will be dressed in black or navy blue, Summer/Dance to be dressed in yellow, Autumn/Drama in browns, red and/or orange and Spring/Visual in green. Thank you for your support with this.

Well that's certainly enough info for now, I hope I haven't blown your mind with too much with this novel.

Hi Team 13,

I can tell you have lots planned for this term with all the news in the latest school newsletter. Maths week sounds great, I think we will have a maths challenge at home too! Maybe a 'guess the weight" challenge with Reuben and his brother.

I am looking forward to book week and it sounds like that week is full to overflowing. I hope you will get those PJs washed and ready for the special day on the 19th August. Hot milo sounds like a great idea especially if today's weather is an example of what we can expect in a couple of weeks.

Today when I was in class I saw some beautiful tree paintings - the looked fantastic!

Week Four
This week is ‘Maths Week’. This will be a great opportunity to set up some fun maths challenges at home. We will be doing the online competitions that your child can do at home as well by going to http://mathsweek.org.nz/ and either register themselves or they can use our classroom registration, username Team 13, password 13.


Book Week
Next week is book week. We will be doing a lot of fun things that will compliment our usual school programme. Not the least will be some fun dress up days. On Tuesday the children are to dress up as their favourite book character and there will be a parade at 9.00 for all to see each other, but only for those who want to take part. This is not compulsory. We will also be doing other activities like stop, drop and read, buddy class reading, reading around the world (read stories from around the world), fractured fairy tales, Teacher read around (teachers visiting other classes to read a story), and snuggle up and read (children dress up in pj's bring their favourite toy and read stories (there may even be hot milo served - yummy!)). We will also have some guest Authors come and visit to talk to the children as well as many other great activities.
During this week the normal classroom programme will be a bit topsy turvy but the learning will be full on and inspiring.
Reading: This will run as normal and the children will continue to have a book to read every night. Maybe you can make sure that you read a story with them every night too. You could even try to include "Food from a book" lunch, include something in their lunch that appears in a story.
Maths: We will be learning to read and write number stories.
Written Language: We will be writing some interesting and fun fractured fairy tales of our own.
Oral Language: We will be promoting books to our buddy class (Room 7). They will have one minute to promote their favourite. It would be great if you can help them with this too if you have time. Once you have read a book together you can talk about what the book was about and help them retell it to try and inspire the listeners to want to read it themselves.


Grandparents Afternoon Monday 16th August - 2.15-3pm: (The children will be sending home an invitation this week.) If your child’s Grandparent/s is unable to come then they might like to bring a special friend or other family member. Can the Grandparent or friend please bring a picture book to share and read.

On Wednesday 18th August we are having our school, class and individual photos. We are scheduled to have ours at 1.30pm. If you would like to come at lunch time to make sure that they are clean and tidy you are more than welcome.

And finally the children have been so enthusiastic about using whiteboards in class that they have gone through all their whiteboard markers. If you are able to supply some or bring money to school to purchase another couple per child that would be very much appreciated as they are keen to get back to using these wonderful resources.

Please remember there will be a school fair in the library. The library will be open before and after school to purchase any items.

Welcome back to Term 3.

We have a jam-packed term coming up so here are a few details you will want to know.

First of all I would like to welcome Kelsi Phelps (Miss Phelps) who will be with us for 5 weeks. She is a third year student and this is her last placement before going out into the world to have her own class next year.

I would also like to welcome Toby in to our class on Thursday mornings for the next 2 terms as well. He is taking the place of Mrs B.

Slippers
The children are welcome and encouraged to bring their slippers, (or thick socks if they don't have slippers), in again this term to make sure they aren't traipsing dirt or mud into the classroom after playing outside in puddles and the muddy ground. There is a box available for them to put their slippers in.

Topic:
This term we are focusing on Science – Planet Earth and Beyond and The Arts – Music and Dance. We are looking into seasons and seasonal changes and how they affect the environment. In weeks 8 & 9 we will be having an Arts Fortnight with a whole lot of wonderful and exciting things to do with all of The Arts going on.

Maths:
For the next few weeks we will be looking at multiplication and division. At this level this covers grouping and skip counting.

Literacy:
For writing the children will be focusing on Narratives. They will be learning how to write interesting stories concentrating on plot, setting, characters, creating a problem and solving the problem. They will be learning how to make sure that their writing is interesting enough for others to want to read it by giving details, beginning to use similies and using interesting adjectives as well as continuing to use basic punctuation like capital letters and full stops and learning to use more difficult punctuation like speech marks, exclamation marks and apostrophe’s.
They will continue to focus on final diagraphs for handwriting and in their poetry, and for oral language they will be focusing on presenting their Mihi’s. Preparing them for their student led conferences later this term.

What have we been up to this week?

Great to see the Cultural Posters by Reuben's Mum

Hi Team 13,

I have been looking at the cultural posters posted on the website and they look fantastic! You have all worked well putting together the information about your culture. All your smiling faces look beautiful.

Today is the last day of term and it must be nice to have two weeks on holiday before starting the third term. Reuben is going to work on his handwriting over the holidays, and his maths. So we will be ready for term three. While on holiday we will head over the Lake Brunner on the west coast for a few days too - hopefully we won't get snowed in!

Term 2 Week 10

This week team 13 have

* made a big card for Beth to say Goodbye (Boo hoo we will miss you) and we had a shared lunch that was a huge surprise for her and we all loved it. - Max

* been doing a new song for jump jam but we can't remember the name of it - Justine

* been writing about brushing our teeth and how to make toast - Ryan

* been getting ready for our school Disco tonight - Emily

* been learning how to write all the numbers from one to twenty in english, in digits and in Maori - Sophie

* learnt what smart we are more confident with and what smarts we need to concentrate on and work on - Xavier

* leanrt some Maori waiata's and made up some new Maori names using 3 of the different sounds in Maori - Hugo

* made up our success criteria for our maths activities. Now we know when we have finished an activity and go to the next activity - Max

* watched a fabulous magic show from Elregoe and his friendly assistant Sue. We learnt how to stop being a bully at school and how we have the power to make the right choices. - Larissa

Wow I can't believe the end of this term is fast approaching. We only have 2 weeks left before we have a 2 week break. Where has the time gone?

Ferrymead
Thank you to the wonderful parent helpers we had accompany us on the trip I am only sorry that I wasn't well enough to attend myself. However, I believe the children had a wonderful time and they now have a much better idea of how things were done here in New Zealand 100 or so years ago. I hope the children were able to tell you all about it.

Elegrego
Wow! Elgregoe is a fantastic performer. He had a great message about the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, and how to make great choices and he managed to mix in wonderful magic tricks and some live parrots! The children laughed and laughed. The delight on their faces was lovely to see. (This also leads in nicely to our Big Bang Concert next week - more info later in newsletter)


What's coming up for the rest of the term?


Disco
The school disco is fast approaching! It will be held on Friday 25 June. The Junior classes (Years 1-3) will attend at the Village from 6:00 - 7.15pm. Entry to the disco is $2 per child, and there will be sweets and drinks available to purchase. Just a reminder that entry is by the side door opposite the library. Children should then be collected from the covered area at the front of The Village (by the sweet stall). Please be prompt at pick up times.

Big Bang Concert 29 June
As we are having a big focus on Music for the Arts this year, on Tuesday 29 June the Junior team (Years 1 and 2) will be traveling by bus to the Town Hall to attend a concert for children by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. It is called the 'Big Bang Concert,' and this year the theme for the music that will be performed is 'Magic'. This is a great opportunity for the children to see a real orchestra performing and experience art appreciation. If you are able to help for this trip we would much appreciate it. This is for a half day, from midday until the end of the day. Please come in and see Cat Kincaid if you are available.


Parent Help
Thank you so much to those parents who are able to help out at different times for different occasions. Don't forget if you are wanting to help out with reading or writing in class time then there is a roster on the class noticeboard for you to fill in.


Numeracy Focus
We are focusing more on subtraction at the moment and our basic facts. For example if we know that 10 - 7 = 3 then we know that 100 - 70 = 30 and also 20 - 17 = 3 etc. The children are various stages of this some are working on facts to 10 and some are working on these facts to 20 and the rest are working on using these facts to work out higher 2 (or in some cases 3) digit numbers.


Writing
We are continuing to look at procedural writing and how we know we are successful in our writing. We have learnt that when writing a procedure we need a title, a goal, ingredients (for a recipe) or instructions (for a game etc) and then we have the different steps. We have been focusing on being able to identify nouns and verbs in our steps. Some of us have even been looking at pronouns and conjunctions as well.


Well I think that's all for now. I hope you have enjoyed our term, I know we have, it's certainly been a very productive one with learning about New Zealand cultures and participating in a Hangi (yes that was earlier this term) etc. Enjoy the rest of the term.

Term 2 Week 6

What have we been learning the last few weeks?

* We had a hangi for all the year 2's during cultural festival week. Rueben.

* We have been learning about the Maori culture. We did weaving, and we learnt some Rakau games. We learnt how to prepare for a hangi, by preparing vegetables, digging a big hole in the ground, and safety precautions around a hangi pit. Lucas and Justine

* We have been learning about the 7 stars of Matariki - Charlotte

* Reuben and Max had their birthdays and had morning tea with Mr Sibson. Max

* We learnt a couple of new songs - Star treking across the universe and a Matariki song. Xavier

* We put on and performed at the whole school assembly in week 5. - Hugo

* Miss Captain was teaching us because Miss Kincaid was sick. - Sophie

* The learning reports went home and our parents came in to conference with Miss Kincaid.

* The weather has been cold and rainy and we have been stuck inside for the last week and more. But we are lucky because we have been able to watch movies like Flushed Away, Spongebob Squarepants and Shrek 2. Renee and Jason

Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter

Thank you to all the well-wishers and your kinds thoughts while I was away sick. I am happy to say that I am feeling much better and glad to be back at school.

What's new?


Slippers: As discussed at the beginning of the year I like to introduce slippers during the wet, winter terms into the classroom. With the children having to walk through the rain to get to class, to get their lunch, to go to the bathroom they are getting their feet wet and then tend to traipse that wetness through the classroom. This is very unpleasant on the mat and for the children to have to sit in so I like to encourage the children to have slippers to wear in the classroom. There is a box at the door for the children to put their slippers in and another box for them to put their shoes in. You don't need to go out and buy another pair of slippers to have at school they can either take them to school everyday and bring them home everyday (which can be annoying and they may forget to bring them, so if they can keep them at school that would be great) or they can have a pair of thick woolen socks to put on. Most of the children are already doing this and it is working really well, thank you.

DVD's: During the wet lunchtimes I have been putting on DVD's through the computer and data projector to watch. Mainly because the children get very restless and hyped up when being couped up inside all day everyday (like they have this week) This tends to keep them calm and they enjoy the break. The children get to choose whether they want to watch these DVD's or they can go next door to Room 14 and choose a quiet indoor activity to play in there. I have asked the children if they have any DVD's they would like to watch to bring them in and I will look after them until they are needed. Although all these movies are children's movies, some of them have PG ratings so if you are uncomfortable with the children watching these without your presence then please let them know they need to choose the option in Room 14. Otherwise they tend to choose watching the DVD's.

Timetable: Your class parent co-ordinator, Jackie White, has very kindly made up a timetable for parent help in the classroom. This is mainly during writing and reading times. If you would like to help out during these times please put your name down on the roster that is pinned to the classroom notice board. Please no pre-school children though. As much as I would appreciate the support I find that pre-schoolers tend to either take the attention of the parents away from the classroom children or they become a distraction for the children in the class, either way this kind of defeats the purpose of parent helpers.

Sickness: There are quite a few nasty bugs going around at the moment and so to alleviate these bugs being passed on again we ask that you keep your child at home if they are showing any signs of these bugs, ie incessant coughing, running noses, sore throats, or if you are unlucky enough to have what I had dizzy spells, nausea, fever etc.

Naming Clothes: There have been 2 jerseys disappear from our classroom over the past few weeks. And I have noticed a few items of clothing (sports gear, shirts, dresses, socks and jerseys) that don't have names on them. This makes it very difficult to give them back to the rightful owner especially when the children don't recognise their own clothes. Can you please check your children's clothes (all of them) and make sure they are clearly labeled. Also if you happen to have Reuben Anderson's or Justine Berry's jerseys by accident can you please bring these back to school asap? Thank you.

Trips coming up:
On Monday 14th June all the year 2's are going to Ferrymead to tie in with our topic/inquiry work. We have been looking at cultures and what culture we personally associate with. This term we are looking more into the New Zealand culture - hence the cultural week with different Maori activities, rakau games, hangi etc. Now we are going to look into the past and see how things were done and what life was like 100 or so years ago - hence the visit to Ferrymead Historical Park. We will be learning what school was like, what games they played, how housework was done and entertainment ie theatre etc in days gone by. I will be needing 2 parent helpers to help out on this day, so if you are free, haven't helped out before and don't have any pre-schoolers to look after at this time or can arrange for them to be looked after then please see me. This is a full day excursion, the children will need their own lunch and we will have a picnic lunch together.

Curriculum
Maths: We are learning to tell the difference between repeated patterns and sequential patterns. We are learning to continue these patterns and make up our own patterns.

Writing: We are doing procedural writing and learning how to write instructions for how to make or do something. Our success criteria is when we have a title, a goal, a list of materials required and the steps for the procedure. Each step must start with a verb - a doing word ie add, pour, put, mix, plug, eat, drink, wait, place etc.

Handwriting: We are learning the final blend mp in words like jump, tramp, bump etc. This is also the focus for the poem of the week

Oral Language: We are learning to be good listeners and good speakers. A good listener 1) looks at the person, 2) doesn't talk, 3) uses appropriate facial expressions, 4) leans in closer to the speaker. A good speaker 1) Speaks clearly, 2) speaks firmly, 3) has an interesting topic, 4) has at least 4 points to share.

I hope this gives you enough information to keep you informed with what you're children are doing in class time. The children were quite shocked to hear that they were actually learning things when they play their games and have fun in class. They can't believe that you can have fun and learn at the same time lol.

I hope you are enjoying this lovely weather - good for the ducks they say, but I think even they will be getting sick of it by now. Keep warm, try and keep those dreaded bugs away and have a great week.

What have Team 13 been up to so far this term?

Hello, my name is Carmen Dodd and I am lucky enough to be part of Room 13 for the last 5 weeks of term 1.

I am a third year student at the University of Canterbury College of Education.

I enjoy seeing students succeed and move forward in their learning. I look forward to learning from them as well as teaching them.

I have met a number of parents during the week and look forward to meeting others as you pass through the classroom.

Welcome to the class of 2010

Thank you to all the parents who were able to make it to the Meet the parent night last night. It was great to see a few familiar faces and to meet some new ones.

We have a great year in store for us this year and have a big focus on The Arts where there will be lots of performances and presentations and other exciting events happening throughout the school for the children and community to be a part of. This is a year of celebration and that is what this year's focus is all about, celebrating us and our cultures and who we are as individuals, as a group, a school environment, as a culture etc.

Watch this space for updates about events that particularly pertain to Team 13 and the Junior Team.

Rugby

After the learning conference I got my jersey signed by the Canterbury Rugby team and my photo with the Ranfurly Shield.

On Saturday I went to the rugby with Dad and Corban at AMI Stadium. Canterbury won. We saw Larry the Lamb. I got my arm signed by Andy Ellis.

The holidays are nearly here!!!!!

Big Sister coming around

Claire is my big sister. On Friday night she came for tea. We were having fish and chips. She has a puppy called Roxy. Adam has a dog called Czar. Roxy is a Labrodour cross with a German Shepard. Roxy never eats her own food. She mostly eats Czar's food. The first day I met Roxy, which was on a Saturday about three weeks ago, the day after that I lost my first upper tooth. Have a good weekend!

This week we . . .

* Tom was the star child this week - Ryan

* We went to see the NZ Army Band - Leo. We knew every song and we sang along and clapped - Tom & Cass. There were heaps of songs and the focus was on Music From Around The World - Ryan & Mary. We got to go (yell out as loud as we could) bang in one of the songs - Kyle. At the end of the concert on the bus on the way back to school Yusuke's nose started bleeding - Trent.

* The handwriting and poems this week was oy and oi - Annabelle

* We had our Student Led Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday and we had to do our Mihi's first and my mum was looking for my book in my totetray. I got lost and went to the wrong library - Tom

* We went to room 22 with Mrs R for our Poetry on Friday - Eliza.

* We had our school photos taken on Monday - Dan

* The seats are nearly finished under the Big tree - Ryan.

* Next week we don't have to do any homework because we (the whole school) are doing the Free Rice thing - Daniel. When you go on the computer you have to go on everyday after school and play the games in order to gain grains of rice. We need to get 10 grains of rice each, every day. Then we need to fill in our booklet and room 22 will collate all the grains of rice we get as a class - Team 13.

In the weekend I went to a dairy farm.it was fun because I got to pat calves I also got to see all the cows get milked. Annabelle

What happened this week?

* Dan was the star child - Moiz

* We had cricket coaching. It was fun because we got to do cricket instead of maths and we played a junior version of cricket and I got 8 runs and my team got 57 which made us the winners - Tom. We got some bags of goodies at the end of it. - Ryan. Tom and I got 47 catches in a row without dropping it when we were throwing the ball to each other. - Trent.

* We did ew and ue for handwriting and poetry. - Anna-Lucy

* It was Jee-Sung's birthday on Wednesday. - Annabelle.

* We did our calendar art. We started with printing using rainbow sheets but have ended up using pictures we drew of our family. This is because the rainbow sheets didn't come out as good as we had hoped. If you have the rainbow sheet facing up then the paper you are drawing on comes up a bit better - Mary.

* Mr Sibson came in when we were doing our rainbow art and he joined in during handwriting time and did hangman with us. - Kyle

* A man called Graham came in to help Miss Kurano with her lesson. - Eliza. He knows Eliza's mum and dad and he knows Ryan's dad too. - Ryan

* We had a few teachers teaching us at different times this week, we had Mrs Norton, Mrs R and Mr Jordan. - Anna-Lucy

* We did a PMI for our science topic about keeping ourselves warm - Ryan. We also did an assessment on our experiments. - Daniel.

Term 3 Week 6

What have Team 13 been doing for the past 2 weeks?

* Today we went to assembly and Teams 22 and 14 did a slide show for us and told us about the free rice website that we will be able to do. We get no homework the week we do this. - Rose

* We went to the museum and we had lunch in the gardens and played on the playground - Reilly. We went into a big umbrella tree and played in it and me and Tom went the highest in there - Trent. We leanrt about our bodies at the museum - Leo.
We learnt:

The large intestine was quite small and the small intestine was really long - Alex.
Our heart is not the shape of a love heart. - Rosa

I didn't know that you had a liver in your body and it does more than 500 things for your body - Reilly
The food and food and water goes through your system really slowly and takes on average about 30 hours for your food to go right through your whole body system. - Tom
I learnt that when you drink too much fizzy it makes you burp - Cass
I could see how a skeleton opened a door and I saw a skeleton of a man with a special torch - Jackson.

Term 3 Week 4

What did we learn this week?

* We learnt a new jump jam song called Chihuahua - Cass. It's is cool at the end when you put your hand on somebody's shoulder and make a train singing chihuahua - Tom. I like it at the very end when we shake our finger like you're telling someone off and say "stop playing with that radio or yours, I'm trying to get some sleep" - Kyle.

* Rosa was our star child - Ryan. She was a good star child because she helped Daniel a lot when he first started in our class - Anna-Lucy.

* Junior was a new person who started in our class on Wednesday - Keenan. Junior came from Auckland, we are helping Junior fit into the class by telling him the routines and showing him what to do, his name is Fanguna but we call him Junior and he is from Tonga and is learning English. - Team 13

* We did the long vowel sound "ee, ie" for poetry and handwriting this week - Jackson. Mrs Gordon came in to helps us with the poem on Friday while Miss Kincaid took the choir and some of her class, room 22, came and helped us too - Kyle. Mrs Gordon knew quite a few of us because she has taught a lot of our siblings - Anna-Lucy.

* We made friendship pictures using only paper and we weren't allowed to draw anything - Jee-Sung. Room 9 got to do their own picture as well as helping their buddies - Ryan.

* Cass got her cast off and now she just has a bandage on it. She needs to keep this on for 1 week - Mary.

* On Friday we got to see a lamb because room 20 are looking after it for their inquiry - Annabelle.

* We fare-welled Mr Proctor. We are very sad to see him go - Tom. He's going to be a Deputy Principal at Linwood Primary - Ryan.

* Rosa is going to bring in a suprise animal for us to meet for her star news - Jackson.

Hi everyone,

Just checking in to see how you all are!
At the momment I am at Cotswold School and the class I am in are lovely :) I hear there are three more students in your class, I hope you are looking after them and being great fendalton friends. I have been working at FOSCAR as Trent, Eliza and Rose know, I get to see them when they re there and help them wth their homework!
I am hoping to come in and visit, and maybe do some fun things with you to help Miss Kincaid while she is super busy.

Term 3 Week 3

This week we:

* Did 'ay' and 'ai' for handwriting and poetry. - Anna-Lucy

* Daniel was our star child for this week. We learnt that his favourite food is chicken nuggets, he has an older brother in room 16, he has a 17 year old cat called Milly, he has a bigger sister who is still in England finishing her exams and he comes from Birmingham in England. - Keenan and Team 13

* We learnt how to write the recipe for making milkshakes and we might be able to make them next week - Ryan

* We are about to head off to the village to front the junior assembly. Tom, Mary and Eliza are all speaking at this assembly. Trent, Anna-Lucy, Daniel, Cass and Annabelle are doing their mihi's. We are going to sing some Maori songs. We will celebrate people's birthdays and we are going to sing We're all in this together. - Mary and Team 13.

* We went to visit our buddy class and they helped us do our poetry sheets and they helped us choose our books from the library. Daniel, Tom and Ryan

* We went to see the wearable arts that the senior children put on for us on Tuesday. They designed and made their own costumes - there was a busy bee, a swine flu, they sang the 'Octopus' Garden' using fluorescent lights and colours which was really effective, Mr Norton dressed up as a lady, There were some visitors to NZ and one of them slipped in a cow patty and one sat on the wrong seat and the taxi driver had to shue him away and they got all confused with the language and exaggerated their accents. Team 13

* We made up games. This was fun. We made up the rules and I made the rule go back 5 spaces and you have to do that. - Keenan

* We are learning to write procedures and instructions - Rose

* We are learning our mihi because it's Maori week this week and we are doing our mihi's on the night our parents come to se what we have been learning and doing at school (Student Led Conferences) - Daniel, Kyle and Ryan. Some of us did our mihi's in front of our buddy class room 9 - Rose.

* We looked at different procedures and one was a recipe for making slime. - Mary. We decided to follow this recipe to see if we can make slime. - Jee-Sung. Miss Kincaid got us the ingredients to make the slime - Trent.

* Mrs R came in and took us for reading and P.E. - Mary. We played a basketball game - Reilly. We also played simon says which was fun - Annabelle. We played simon says in Maori this made the game quite hard. - Ryan.

* The Patrick Stars and the Planktons had to do a contract on a journal story called 'The fox and the goat'. It was about a fox who tricked a goat and made him fall down a well. - Tom

* Miss Kincaid taught us some Maori songs - Rosa. We are leading junior assembly next week and we are going to sing these songs. - Eliza.

* The Student Led COnferences are no longer in week 5 they are now going to be in week 8. - Miss Kincaid

Ice skating and X - ray

On Sunday I went ice skating. I fell over backwards and got a sore left wrist. I had to have an X-ray. The doctor said that I broke my wrist (I have a greenstick fracture)! So I had to get a cast. I chose pink. I got to keep my X- ray (which I think is cool).

One of the problems with having a cast is that I can't go skiing. My little sister is going to learn to ski. I am going to have a snowball fight with Mummy. Later in the ski season my little sister might be able to teach me how to ski!

Yay its the holidays now

Term 2 Week 10

Here we are at the end of term 2 already. Man how this term went fast. What have we done this term?

* Rose was the star child and i_e was the handwriting focus for the last week. - Ryan

* Today it was the sausage sizzle and I had 3 sausages - Trent

* We learnt a new song called called We're all in this together - Alex

* On Wednesday we saw ElGregoe the magician - Kyle

* We officially opened the playhouse and we got to play in it on Wednesday - Annabelle

* For the opening of the playhouse I did a speech. I was excited and shivering with nerves all at the same time - Mary

* I went to boys breakfast with my father and my brother and it was really funny and the boys won when they were throwing the basketballs into the hoop and my dad tried to throw it in and he missed - Tom

* ElGregoe's parrot came too - Reilly

Term 2 Week 9

What have we learnt this week?

* We've been learning the a_e sounds - Anna-Lucy. Make, Rate, Change, Drake, fake, flake etc

* The junior playhouse was being built on Friday this week and the opening will be next Monday. - Annabelle

* We have been looking at the primary and secondary colours with our buddy class and then how to manipulate the colours of the rainbow to make white. - Alex and Miss Kincaid

* We've been doing a poem called the magic e that changes words. - Eliza

* Keenan was our star child this week.

* Miss Kincaid went with the choir again and we got to go to different classes for the morning. - Team 13

* We did our poetry with our buddy class in room 9 today (friday)

* The toilets were broken and they stunk out our classroom for a wee while so we went outside and did jump jam - Miss Kincaid

* At can do time Annabelle, Mary and Cass all decorated and made some magnets. - Mary

Planet Mars - a story by Cass

When we landed on Planet Mars we saw shiny golden stars. Then we saw brave blue aliens and sparkly golden moons. Then we saw shallow blue holes in the deep blue sea.

Then very tiredly we entered the spaceship and zoomed back to Planet Earth and went back to have a long, long sleep. After a long sleep we went zoming back to Planet Mars. Then we came back to Yuske's house and had a nice cup of tea and some biscuits.

Term 2 Week 8

This week we . . .

• have been writing about going on a journey and what we saw.  We had to name 5 nouns (things we saw) and each noun had to have 2 adjectives (describe the things we saw) - Tom
• celebrated Tom's birthday - thank you Tom for the chocolates! - Mary
• cut up some magazines to show what foods we can eat the least, some and most of. - Ryan
• looked at the 'str' blend and words like stranger, strangle, stretch, string, straight, stray, street, straven etc - Annay-Lucy and team 13
• learnt a new jump jam song.  It is called Switch and it is really fast and really fun! 
• learnt how to mix primary colours to get secondary colours with our buddy class - Eliza

Term 2 Week 7

This week Team 13 . . .

Learnt about the blend 'thr' with words like thrill, through, thrush, three, thread, and throb - Anna-Lucy and class

Learnt how to write a diary - Ryan & Reilly

Went to different classes on Tuesday morning because Miss Kincaid went with the choir to Burnside High School - Dan. This was scary says Jackson. It was exciting because some epople got to do some things they haven't done for a long time like PMP - Eliza.

We changed the classroom around and I like it because my tote-tray is on a different side. Sometimes I get confused and forget that I have moved my seat and my tote-tray - Mary.

On Monday only the teachers had to go to school and the kids got the day off - Kyle.

What did Team 13 get up to in this short week?

We learnt some 'squ' words like squid, squiggle, squash, squirt, squidward, squirrel, squish, squint, squeak, squat, squawk, squeeze, squeal etc - Team 13

We celebrated the Queens birthday on Monday even though it wasn't her actual birthday. - Eliza

We have been learning repeating and sequential patterns for maths. We used the people in our class to make the patterns. - Mary and Ryan

We learnt how to do a Venn Diagram with our buddy class. We compared the true story of the 3 little pigs and the traditional story of the 3 little pigs. - Dan & Tom

What did we get up to this week?

The Patrick Star's and the Plankton's have been learning about ants and grasshoppers and doing a reading contract on this fable. - Tom

We have been learning how to skip count in 2's using the odd numbers for a change. - Keenan

We have been learning 'spl' words like split, splotch, splendid, splash, splutter, splinter, splish, splosh, splatter, splice etc. - Rose (and class)

We were visited by 2 little mice this morning thanks to Alex. The mice are called Mickey and Minnie. They tickled when they were on our hands, they went to the toilet on some people's hands. They vibrated on our hands. Their feet and their claws were very sharp.

We went to the hall and watched a play. It was called 'Rev it up!' They told us a story about a girl who didn't think she was special but turns out she was. - Leo, Rosa and Dan.

On Wednesday we had Mrs Talaska, she was a fun happy teacher. - Trent

Our parents came in after school on Tuesday and Thursday to talk to our teacher. - Eliza

We had Fendalton Friends on Tuesday, that was very fun. - Kyle We played games and got to know each other - Alex.

Dear Parent and Caregivers,

We are pleased to be sending home our new Learning Reports for you to look at and discuss with your children over the next few days. You will notice that the contents page states that there will be a Year 1 Letter/Sound sheet and a FOS Diagnostic Spelling sheet. Please note that these sheets will only be in your child's learning report if applicable.

There are sections of these reports that require you or the children to make comments. You may get your child to write or scribe for them. Ask them to think about what they learned, enjoyed or found particularly memorable about the learning. We encourage you to comment about your child's learning, what you are proud of and any ideas for next steps. Please remember to bring your child's learning report to your meeting.

We look forward to meeting with you, and your child, next week to discuss these in greater detail.

Today I learned that we need to be at Narnia at 10 to 7 so I will have to pick Ambrose up 15minutes early.
Because of this learning now I wont be late.
My next step in learning is to pick Ambrose up at 6:30.

Goal Evidence done wrongly. W.A

Today I learned that I have been doing the wrong type of goal evidence this year and not making it precise. I will try and make real goal evidence so I will not leave Fendalton without ever competing a real goal/evidence.
Because of this learning I will now know what to do when I go to Cobham next year,
My next step in learning is to finish my goals with the expected expectations.

Reflection-Clarinet Exam-Concentration

Today I learned that if you Concentrate on something you can do it well.
Because of this learning I now know to Concentrate on something to do it well.
The next step in my learning is to get a Merit, Distinction or High Distinction in Grade 3.

Today I learned how to tidy a file and how to move items that are from first class and because of this learning now I can
do this more often and make my foler tidyer and something that I don't understand is why we have to go to beach education on this wednesday and why it couldn't be earlyer and my next step or my learning is to clean my stuff out for next year.

Interview stuffed. W.A

Today I learned that when you mess up a interview people get annoyed with you and make you feel let down. When I have another interview I will try and not laugh or interupt if someone else is speaking. I had the interview with Jason and Hamish. We had 3 trys before we got a interview that was Acceptable.
Because of this learning I will now know what to do to make a interview better.
My next step in learning is to think before I act like my Grandmother always tells me to.

Today I learned that we are going to have a surprise assembly for Dr. Doig because she got her Doctoral.

Reflection of the 1st of December

Today I learned that taking photos of all the new entrants coming to
Fendalton school next year is a hard job as I had to do it with sarah.
To make the already tricky job trickier we had to name every photo with
the childs name.
Because of this learning I will think twice before I accept a job like
this again.
The next step in my learning is to get better at taking digital photos and
editing them.
Something I don't understand is why some of the children were refusing to
have their photo taken.

Year 6 breakup=:'(

Today I learned that the Year 6 breakup party is going to be at Jelly Park instead of QE2. Im really annoyed at this because I havn't been to the new hydraslides. Because of this learning I will become more depressed in the future. My next step in learning is to finish my party preperations this afternoon.
