Reflection- storytelling and algebra

Today I learned that you can teach algebra through story. My maths class were looking at what a variable is and came up with many brilliant ideas such as something that changes, a number that can alter and so on. We talked about how the water in the fish tank fluctuates and that this is the variable. Someone mentioned that that wasn't the only variable- that the amount of water or sunlight also are variables! Brilliant!

Because of this learning I'm going to get the class making up their own stories which involve variables and then express these as equations.

The next step in my learning is to share this with my teaching team because I think they will be interested and might want to try this. I'll do this by emailing this blog reflection to them.

Reflection - Web Challenge

Today I learned that it is going to take time, hard work and effort.
I think that we have a chance because the one that won last year was not very impressive.

Reflection- decathlon

Today I learned what a decathlon is. It is a sport that has 10 sports over 2 days.
Because of this learning I can now type what it is instead of copying out of a book.
The next step in my learning is to find out information on other sports.

Web Challenge

Today I learned that making a web challenge has a lot of steps and some are simple and others arent.because of this learning I now Know that before making a website you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time on it.

Reflection-Variables

Today I learned some examples of "vary".
I also learned something about Mr C's camera that Mrs Edwick told me.
Because of this learning I now know how to take a good picture!!

Today I learned about making tables in Word.
Because of this learning I can now make tables quickly in Microsoft Word.
Something I don't understand is why when you blow the table up to make it
bigger it sometimes cuts some of the bits off the table resulting in an
effect that looks like the table has been chopped in half with scissors.

Reflection - Read Through

Today I learned that if you read through a question properly then you can get the question right.
Because of this learning I can now do this to get more questions right.
Something I dont understand is that even if you read through it a couple of times you can still miss a word and you might get the question wrong
The next step in my learning is to do this more often so I can get a lot of questions right.

Reflection- growth in independence

Today I realised how much I missed my class while I was away during the
last week of last term.

I also learned today that Bryony and Katie have really developed in their
ability to be able to problem solve. I realised this while watching them
stick to a tricky software installation job that I gave them. The great
thing about this was that they enjoyed doing it, stuck to it all day, AND
got it going. This saved me heaps of time and I'm really grateful for this.

Because of this learning I can now give Bryony and Katie more
responsibility for various things and know that they will get the job done.

The next step in my learning is to ensure that this learning is shared
with others in team 13, who I know are equally awesome!

Reflection - MindMapping

Today I learned how to do a MindMap.
Because of this learning I can now remember what I read or was read to.
The next step in my learning is to use MindMapping more and often as well.

Reflection- networking

Today I learned that it's quite tricky to get all the ethernet plugs plugged into the right slots in the classrooms. You don't know which one goes into which hole. I also learned that maths is fun if you add in jellybeans. We played greedy pig.

Something I don't understand is which plug go in which hole at the moment. I can probably learn from this though.

Because of this learning I now know that one plug has to go into F7 and another plug goes into the hub.

The next step in my learning is to be able to plug everything in by myself.

Back now, down in Queenstown

Hi everyone,

I'm back now and am down in Te Anau with Angela and her friend Jennette from London. Today we drive to Arrowtown where we'll base ourselves for a couple of days skiing. I'm going to learn how to snowboard which I'm looking forward to! Melbourne was brilliant- I learned lots of really challenging and useful things and also had a lot of what we do validated too! It was also good to catch up with some close friends who teach in Australia.

I hope you are all enjoying time with family and friends where-ever you are. Sarah- have fun in Santiago and drop us a line through the blog if you can. Tara- enjoy time with relations in Ireland and Dubai. Kitty- see if you can get your grandparents involved in the blog too!

Today I learned that
I could finish my sewing in time (4 days) and I actually had spear time.
Because of this learning I now know that I could finish my sewing in time.
My next step in learning is to learn my parts in Oprah 3!

Sick 2day

Today I was sick.
BUT I still learned because today was my B'day and I got a book on animals and caring for them and I learned things like not forcing your animals into their new enviroment and things like that.because of this learning if/when I get another pet I will know that doing this will make him/her happier.

Today I have my Villa Maria interview and I'm very nervous. I sooooo hope I get in to Villa.

Today I learnt a new way to sew. This way makes you sew much faster and get it done quickly. Because of this learning I can now finish my project sooner. My next step in learning is to make a more complicated project.

Reflection- Sewing

Today I learned if you are using the 'The Running Stitch' you have to go 3 strands forward and put the needle through then go 1 strand through and then pull the needle out to get a very good pattern.

Because of this learning I can now get a good pattern.

Something I don't understand is that sometimes if you don't use the 3 strands forward and 1 strand through thing sometimes it will disappear underneath the material.

Today I learned about arkward situations in mediators where we ahd a
person who wanted to play a game wqith someone elese and they werent
making fair teams for the game then they said that they didnt want to play
the game and were all arguing with each other then we solved the problem
eventually by saying that next time they played that game they would make
fair teams.
Because of this learning i can now solve peoples problems better in
mediators.
The next step in my learning is to learn to solve these problems quickly.

Today I learned how to tie a SUCCESSFUL cast off knot in sewing!I also learned that
your arm REALLY REALLY REALLY hurts after you have had mennigacocal b injection
and to think we are getting 2 more!!!!!!Because of this learning I will be able to do better
sewing AND know what to expect for our next injection.Arrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!

Today I learned it is difficult making choices on what to put on your wall hanging/table mat.
I also learned that you must be very organised when you are doing something like sewing.

Sick at home

I'm still unwell which is a pain because I'm flying out to Melbourne this afternoon. At least I am to enjoy some really great learning at the thinking conference which I'm excited about!

I hope all of team 13 are well and enjoying their weekend.

Audio Blogging is here

Today I learned how to embed a sound file into my blog which could be really useful! Click here to play my first sound file

Here's what I did...

1. Made a new conference called audioblog inside my Home Page Folder in FirstClass. You can email to a conference using FirstClass but not directly to a folder which is a pain, that is why I had to make a conference.


2. Made a new email message to this conference, which came up in the directory in FirstClass.


3. Recorded a voice message and sent the email to the conference.


4. Opened up my home page folder and went inside the audioblog conference, clicked on the link to find the URL for the .wav file that is the voice message (phew). Copy this link to the clipboard.


5. Found out how to embed a sound file (or a movie) into a web page at this webpage.


6. Pasted the code into my blog and changed the URL of the sound file.

Wammo- it works!
Because of this learning I can now help those for whom writing is not easy to record their reflections.
The next step in my learning is to try to make this easy so anyone can do it! Plus I want to make it so that it is embedded in the page rather than as a hyperlink- for some reason blogger won't accept the 'embed' tag.
